Closing the Loop on the Academic Year

As the school year draws to a close, it’s easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of exams, graduation ceremonies, sports days and last-minute meetings. It’s tempting to just simply get to the finish line and collapse, but if you can take a moment to reflect on the past year, you may find it’s a powerful tool that can lead to big improvements for both you and your team.

Celebrate the wins

Reflection gives you a chance, and the permission that you might sometimes need to give yourself, to celebrate your successes. It’s easy to forget these when you’re constantly moving forward on that treadmill that’s stuck on a setting that’s just a little bit too fast! Take a moment to look back on the year and acknowledge your achievements. These wins, big or small, deserve recognition and celebration. By acknowledging these, you’re not only giving yourself a boost but also building a positive foundation of celebration for the upcoming year.

Learn from the gifts

No school year is without its challenges, but each challenge comes with gifts hiding within. Reflecting on these is not about dwelling on the negative but about learning and growing. By assessing these moments of challenge, you can identify positives that have come from them. Perhaps it’s the gift of learning or the internal strength you’ve gained from overcoming these hurdles. This proactive approach turns obstacles into opportunities for growth, setting you and your school up for greater success in the future.

Keep growing

Reflecting on personal professional growth is equally important as reflecting on the school community as a whole. Personal reflection helps you identify your strengths and areas where you can grow as a leader. It can help you to work out what support might help you be even better next year. This not only benefits you but also sets a powerful example for staff and students and will impact your team positively.

Plan ahead, but not too quickly

Reflection naturally leads to planning but I suggest you don’t move on to this phase too quickly. Once you’ve celebrated your successes and identified areas for improvement, you can set goals for the next school year, but it may be worth simply sitting with your reflections for a while, perhaps with the sun on your face and a good book in your hand. By the time you’re ready to plan those reflections will have become fully formed and can inform and help develop your vision so you and your team can hit the ground running when school starts again.

Close the loop

Taking the time to reflect can significantly impact your ability to relax over the summer. By addressing and closing the loop on the academic year, you can mentally and emotionally detach, allowing yourself to recharge fully. Knowing that you’ve learnt from the past year’s experiences can give a real sense of peace of mind. This well-deserved break will help you return rejuvenated and ready to tackle the new school year with fresh energy and perspective.

Happy holidays and happy reflecting! 🪞
