Why asking for help isn’t failing!

In my experience, school leadership can be a fulfilling and frustrating job, full of challenges, joys and some boring bits in between. But it’s a common misconception that as a leader you should be able to cope with all these challenges and just keep going. That if you can’t and you seek help, then you’re failing in some way.  

What always stands out to me with this misconception is that educators actively encourage students to seek help on a daily basis. The message that asking for help is not failing couldn’t be louder in most schools. For students, asking for help shows great self-awareness, enhances performance, fosters critical thinking and problem solving and encourages a collaborative learning community built on mutual support. So why do so many school leaders not heed this same advice?  

If you’re a school leader feeling a bit wobbly about asking for support for you or your team, here are a few reasons why asking for help from a coach will not only support you through the challenges but also enhance your performance and wellbeing in general.

A content and stable teaching team brings continuity, consistency, and ultimately, improved student outcomes. 

Now, that doesn’t sound like failure, does it!?
