Why asking for help isn’t failing!
In my experience, school leadership can be a fulfilling and frustrating job, full of challenges, joys and some boring bits in between. But it’s a common misconception that as a leader you should be able to cope with all these challenges and just keep going. That if you can’t and you seek help, then you’re failing in some way.
What always stands out to me with this misconception is that educators actively encourage students to seek help on a daily basis. The message that asking for help is not failing couldn’t be louder in most schools. For students, asking for help shows great self-awareness, enhances performance, fosters critical thinking and problem solving and encourages a collaborative learning community built on mutual support. So why do so many school leaders not heed this same advice?
